Gannett Fleming issued the following announcement on Nov. 21.
The Automated Vehicle Coalition (AVC), a nonprofit grassroots organization with a mission to improve roads and communities for a safe and responsible future, held a press conference and automated vehicle display at Gannett Fleming’s corporate headquarters in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, on Nov. 20.
The press conference celebrated the passage of Pennsylvania House Bill 1958 and amends Title 75 to authorize the use of automated work zone vehicles by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and the PA Turnpike Commission. It also allows for driver-assistive truck platooning of motor carrier vehicles. Governor Tom Wolf signed the legislation into law as Act 117 of 2018 on Oct. 24.
“I congratulate Pennsylvania for taking a major step forward with the passage of this legislation, which speaks directly to the protection of our highway workers, efficient movement of goods and freight, and promotion of traveler safety,” said Laurie Matkowski, AVC president and Gannett Fleming’s director of connected and automated vehicle services. “The AVC looks forward to continually supporting connected and automated vehicle advancements like autonomous truck-mounted attenuators and driver-assistive truck platooning for Pennsylvania and other states interested in this technology.”
Individuals in attendance included PennDOT Secretary Leslie Richards, Pennsylvania State Rep. Greg Rothman, R-Cumberland, and PA Turnpike Commission Chief Executive Officer Mark Compton, along with AVC members and other distinguished visitors.
In an interview with Fox43, Bob Scaer, PE, Gannett Fleming chairman and CEO, explained, “Our bread and butter is innovative solutions in the engineering space…this convergence in technology is going to change absolutely everything. How we do it, who we do it for, what we do.”
The AVC is a group of like-minded companies that believe properly implemented connected and automated travel has the potential to improve quality of life and safety. Gannett Fleming is a founding member of the AVC. Other members of the AVC include: Burns White Attorneys at Law, CISCO, Econolite, ESRI®, Kuharchik Construction, Path Master, Phoenix Contact, and Royal Truck and Equipment.
