FRANKLIN COUNTY PA AREA DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION: Plans for proposed I-81 exit 12 in Pa. to be unveiled

Franklin County PA Area Development Corporation issued the following announcement on Oct. 4.

The plans for exit 12 will be on public display for the first time Oct. 24. They can be seen — and people can lodge comments — from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the cafeteria at the Franklin County Career and Technology Center.

“I think it’ll help with the truck traffic from the warehouse development,” said county Planning Director Phil Tarquino, who has seen the proposal.

Financed by the state, exit 12 is planned to be created at Guilford Springs Road. Construction is estimated to cost $25 million, according to published reports.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is hosting the plan display.

PennDOT is planning to seek construction bids in 2023, department spokesman Greg Penny said.

Traquino said the interchange doesn’t necessarily resemble others in the county. It has different aspects.

He encouraged residents, business owners, elected officials and those with interest in infrastructure to attend the open house and provide feedback.

“There’s still engineering to be done,” he said.

An exit at Guilford Springs Road would be in the center of Guilford Township, Pa.’s industrial zoning district. Properties on the west side would have access to public water and sewer, while those on the east side only would have access to public water.

The properties also are between two rail-truck terminals in Franklin County.

Guilford Springs Road has an existing intersection with U.S. 11 and gates where Norfolk Southern train tracks cross the road.

The concept of exit 12 started several years ago with discussions among members of a regional board that included Hamilton Township, Pa., Guilford Township and the borough of Chambersburg.

Engineering is being done by Erdman Anthony Associates of Mechanicsburg, Pa.
