North Hills Community Outreach (NHCO) is offering free tax preparation this year for low-income individuals, the group said recently.
The free services will be available through March 31 at the group's Bellevue and Millvale sites. The tax-preparation service is part of the United Way Money in Your Pocket coalition.
Appointments can be made starting Jan. 14 by calling 211. The first appointments start on Jan. 26 and can be made at the NHCO North Boroughs location, AGH-Suburban Campus, 100 S. Jackson Ave., in Bellevue. The appointments can be scheduled for Mondays and Tuesdays, between 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
For the Millvale location, 416 Lincoln Ave., appointments begin on Jan. 31 and are available every Saturday between 9 a.m. and noon.
The NHCO is an interfaith, nonprofit organization that offers services, such as a food pantry, utilities in emergencies, computer training, scholarships, and more for low-income families and individuals in northern Allegheny County.
United Way's Money in Your Pocket Coalition seeks to help low-income individuals and families get free tax services every year. United Way of Allegheny County had 192 IRS-certified volunteers help prepare more than 6,600 tax returns, which resulted in more than $11 million in refunds. In all, volunteers donated more than 9,283 hours of their time. The median income for the clients using the service was about $11,800 per year.
