An unemployment analysis released by Lackawanna County Monday said available jobs in September increased 27.4 percent year-over-year.

It also said the average wage of workers rose nearly 12 percent in September compared with a year ago and that housing sales volume has grown by $8.5 million since January.

The unemployment rate for the county in September was 6.1 percent, beating out Luzerne and Wyoming Counties at 6.7 percent and 6.5 percent respectively.

The report said Lackawanna County's unemployment rate is the lowest it's been since 2008, with 10,225 jobs currently available and 6,300 unemployed residents. Based on the data, the county said there seems to be a shrinking work force in the county, and that training facilities and resources are available.

A graph developed by the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry indicates that this is the first year in which unemployment rates have shown a downward spike of 1 percent or more. September 2013 saw a rate at 8.6 percent. A separate graph indicates that mean wage and job openings saw increases as well, with 10,225 openings and an average wage of $43,992 reported for September 2014. A year earlier, the average wage was $39,307 with 8,023 openings.
