Matthew Nonnemacher, an employee at Boyer's Food Markets in Hazelton, beat out 18 other contestants to win Pennsylvania's Best Bagger Championship on Oct. 29.
Held at Strawberry Square in Harrisburg, the competition was hosted by the Pennsylvania Food Merchants Association (PFMA).
Filling recycled and reusable bags, contestants were judged on speed, bagging technique, distribution of weight, style, attitude and their appearance.
In the weight distribution category, Nonnemacher's bags only varied by 7/100th in weight.
In addition to a trophy and a $250 cash prize, Nonnemacher won a trip to Las Vegas to compete in the National Grocery Bagger competition, which will be held on Feb. 9, 2015.
Brandyn Leeson of Boyer's Food Market won second place in the competition, Lauren Barricella of Giant Eagle was third and Lydia Szlasa of Top Markets came in fourth.
Also represented in the competition were Bill's ShopRites, Karn's Quality Foods Ltd., McMenamin Family ShopRites and Tops Markets.
Alicia Richards, a news anchor for WHTM-TV ABC 27 in Harrisburg, hosted the competition; and PFMA donated $500 to the Alzheimer's Association of Greater Pennsylvania in her name. PFMA also donated all the nonperishable food items used in the competition to the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank.
