Success of Bruster's Real Ice Cream is sweeter than ever

Americans looking to beat the heat are turning to Bruster’s Real Ice Cream more and more, causing the Pittsburgh-based company to post its ninth quarter of continuous growth; for its success, it was named the top ice cream in America in the Consumer Picks 2015 study. Being "real" is a cornerstone of their success.

“We offer the best ice cream in America today, which is made fresh daily in each and every store,” Bruster’s CEO Jim Sahene said. “Friendly employees serve it in a comfortable and relaxing environment. All of this is possible because of Bruster's hard-working, dedicated franchise.”

Offering 150 flavors at over 200 locations, Bruster’s prides itself on being ‘real’ ice cream, using fresh ingredients and making the ice cream in-store daily. Bruster’s also owns the manufacturing center where its proprietary mix is made.

“We control the entire process from start to finish," Sahene said. "This is why we say Bruster’s Ice Cream is real ‘from Cow to Cone.'”

Premium, hand-made ice cream has always been the focus of Bruster's, since Pennsylvania native Bruce Reed opened the first store in 1989. The aim, according to Bruster's web site, was to use this focus on quality to make customers happy.

And it does just that. A 2011 Consumer Reports survey found that young people are more passionate about food quality than about convenience, and the recent success of Bruster's over other ice cream providers illustrates the importance of this trend to Bruster's customers.

Going forward, Sahene plans to focus on what made Bruster’s great from the moment it opened its first store in Bridgewater 25 years ago. Bruster’s also has an aggressive franchise sales approach, leading to exciting plans for future expansion.

“We are lucky to be based in western Pennsylvania, where the work ethic and integrity of our employees are second to none,” Sahene said.

As for the ice cream itself, Sahene is partial to the White Turtle -- a mixture of peanuts and caramel -- which is alongside Sea Salt Caramel and Graham Central Station as popular choices this summer.
