The City of Pittsburgh officially launched its new online fiscal data platform, Fiscal Focus Pittsburgh, on Wednesday.

The website is open to the public and provides information about the city’s budget.

Operated by OpenGov.com, the platform breaks down raw data into a digital presentation to help users understand and analyze the budget. Designers spent three years creating the platform, using government and revenue resources.

The user-friendly portal shows the revenue and expense trends from the past and present. It presents several angles of the budget, such as revenue, expenses and funding sources. The portal also provides answers to frequently asked questions about the city’s budget.

The website aims to open up the government's fiscal processes, offering new ways to collaborate, share and visualize financial data throughout the city's departments, helping officials and the public at large understand the process. This also will help the city make budgeting more efficient and effective.

"This is just the latest way Pittsburgh is letting the sun shine in,” Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto said. “Residents deserve to know how every penny of their tax money is being spent, and this new data tool will allow that in an easy-to-use manner.”

"It's City Council's job to make sure that the city is budgeting and spending responsibly," Councilwoman Natalia Rudiak said. "That's why I sponsored the legislation to bring a platform like OpenGov to Pittsburgh. This tool will not only hold ourselves and our departments accountable to the taxpayer, but help the taxpayers better understand their government."

The database can be accessed at http://pittsburghpa.gov/controller/fiscal-focus-pgh or on Twitter @fiscalfocuspgh.
