Downingtown Area Senior Center board members were awarded a $300,000 check Monday by Chester County commissioners to help fund important renovations and repairs to the center.

The money was awarded by the County’s Department of Community Development and is allocated from Community Development Block Grant funds.

“This money will allow us to complete all of the building maintenance issues that have been thrown our way over the past two years -- issues that have kept us out of the building since December,” Ken Schreffler, executive director of Downingtown Area Senior Center, said. “We are grateful for the support of the Chester County Commissioners, as well as the county’s Department of Community Development and the Office of Aging Services.”

Renovations to the 5,000-square-foot facility will include repairs to the walls, a new roof, floor replacement and HVAC improvements. Downingtown Area Senior Center is located in Ashbridge Commons in East Caln Township and serves approximately 1,500 seniors every year by providing meals, health and wellness programs, and social activities.
The Downingtown Area Senior Center has been operating out of the Thorndale United Methodist Church until renovations are finished, hopefully by the end of the year.
